What’s your focus?

xc_ski_smallIt all depends on what you focus on.

Yesterday I went cross-country skiing with my husband. After having had a good time and fun in the snow, we got back to the car and wanted to drive back home.

Bad surprise: the front tires of the car had gotten bogged down in the snow. No way to make it move. Plenty of people having finished their skiing day left the parking lot drove past us, looking at us struggle, without offering any help. We dug with our hands, scratched at the snow and ice with our ski poles – to no avail.

Finally I walked a few yards to see if there was anybody who’d be willing to help us. I spotted a friendly looking gentleman walking towards his car with his kid and asked if he had a couple minutes to spare to help us with our car. Sure enough, he said, with a big smile. As he started to push alongside my husband, his wife came running to help as well, and in a matter of one or two minutes the problem was solved.

The two walked back to their van, and then we saw that they were stuck, too – so we walked over to give a hand as well, and others joined us, and in the end all were smiling and laughing.

It all depends on what you focus on.

I could have stayed tried to push our car alone, and we might have succeeded eventually, after a long time, cold and miserable, complaining and swearing about all those who drove past us without helping, stating how much the world is a cruel place where nobody helps you and only cares about themselves; or, choose not to focus on that. Yes, the world can be like that. I have experienced it often enough. But I choose not to dwell on that. All it took was a smile, and just asking someone – and help was there.

The world is a good place to be. Life is beautiful and worth living. Focus on the positive, not the negative. Be open. Yes, I’m telling that to myself. Smile.
